| July 27 Sandia High School graduate Sgt. 1st Class Christopher J. Speer of the Army's Special Forces is wounded in a four-hour gun battle with a dozen Taliban and al-Qaida fighters at an enemy compound about seven miles east of Khost, Afghanistan. He later dies of his wounds at a hospital in Germany. Aug. 15 More than 600 family members of Sept. 11 victims file a trillion-dollar federal lawsuit against Saudi officials and institutions.
