Domestic Violence Resource Guide

    If you're a victim of domestic violence, where do you turn for help? If you want to help the people who help others, what can you do?
    What follows is a list of various services in the Albuquerque area and what they need.
    Outside of Albuquerque, call the hot line for domestic violence at the Women's Community Association, (800) 773-3645, or the New Mexico Coalition Against Domestic Violence, (505) 246-9240 for services in your area. Victims, family and friends can also call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at (800) 799-SAFE.
    Albuquerque Health Care for the Homeless Inc. 766-5197; 242-4644 Medical clinic. Services include victim advocacy, social work case management, medical, dental and information and referral for anyone who is, or is about to be, homeless; weekly health clinic at domestic violence shelter to provide medical services to women and children. NEEDS: Monetary donations, socks, toiletries in sample sizes, kids' toys and books, bottled water, dishes, utensils, kitchen appliances, pots and pans, art supplies, sewing supplies, car seats, diapers, coloring books, crayons.
    Albuquerque Rape Crisis Center, 266-7711. A 24-hour crisis line for victims of sexual assault, counseling for anyone affected by sexual assault. Builds bridges between domestic violence and sexual assault communities. NEEDS: Monetary donations, a building, volunteers, new or gently used toys for waiting room, new furniture for group therapy and waiting rooms, interior paint, art supplies, portable displays for exhibits, new carpet, magazine subscriptions, Web site developer.
    All-Faiths Receiving Home. 271-0329. Crisis shelter for abused or neglected children, respite care for children at high-risk of family disruption, outpatient therapy, parent education, forensic interviews with children allegedly abused. NEEDS: Monetary donations, tickets or gift certificates for restaurants, children's outings, electronic items for children, young girl makeup, nail polish, hair products, Barbie Swan Lake and other Barbie items, personal hygiene products, stuffed animals, clothing for children age 12 and younger, towels, twin sheet sets, school supplies.
    Barrett House. 243-4887 (shelter); 246-9244 (office). Short-term emergency shelter for women and children, transitional living opportunity for mentally ill women, supportive housing program for women, thrift store. NEEDS: Monetary donations, volunteers, clothing, furniture, household items, toys, books and anything except major appliances.
    Catholic Charities of Central New Mexico. 724-4670. Resettles refugees, homeless women and children, moves them into permanent housing. Takes referrals from homeless shelters to resettle people. Offers counseling to victims of domestic violence and their children. NEEDS: Food, furniture, computers, monetary donations, vehicle donation.
    Center for Injury Prevention, Research & Education, UNM Department of Emergency Medicine. 272-5062 Referencing: Center for Injury Prevention, Research & Education (CIPRE). Provides library materials for review or checkout; telephone response to queries about injury with emphasis on motor vehicle injury and domestic violence.
    Community and Indian Legal Services. 867-3391; (800) 867-3452. Free legal services to low-income people. NEEDS: Monetary donations, volunteers.
    Cuidando Los Niños. 843-6899. Provides day care to homeless or displaced people (often because of domestic violence); some play therapy; case management. NEEDS: Monetary donations, volunteers, diapers, diapering supplies, latex gloves, toys, new and used kids' and adults' clothing, household goods, art supplies suitable for young children, music and books for preschoolers, office supplies, federally approved collapsible cribs, gift certificates, baby formula, wholesome snack foods, new van, sponsor for database software.
    Domestic Violence Division, 2nd Judicial District Court. 841-6737. Orders of protection, information and referral.
    Enlace Comunitario (Community Link). 246-8972. Peer support, advocacy, case management, counseling for women and children, outreach, information and referral for any Spanish-speaking woman who is a victim of domestic violence. Runs Mujeres en Accion, a kitchen cooperative where victims of domestic violence learn job skills while generating income. NEEDS: Monetary donations, volunteer mentors, office volunteers, computer training and technical support, art supplies and toys for child-care center, for newborn to age 5, office supplies.
    The Evolution Group. 242-6988. Counseling for victims and offenders of domestic violence.
    Haven House. 896-4869, or 1-800-526-7157, open 24 hours. Emergency shelter located in Sandoval County, serving Albuquerque metropolitan area and outlying areas. Crisis intervention, batterer intervention program, advocacy, educational programs and support services for domestic violence victims. All services are free. NEEDS: Monetary donations, volunteers, office supplies, disposable diapers, unused linen and bath towels, toilet paper, towels, cleaning supplies, cooking and eating utensils.
    Joy Junction. 877-6967. 24-hour emergency shelter for families (also including couples, single females with children, single females and single men with children); meal site (three meals a day, seven days a week), 24-hour courtesy van, pastoral counseling, thrift store. NEEDS: Monetary donations, food, clothing, toiletries (especially samples), paper products, bleach, women's hygiene products, breakfast meats.
    Kirtland Air Force Base Family Advocacy Program. 846-0139. Intervention and treatment for military families affected by domestic violence.
    New Mexico Legal Aid Inc. 243-7871. Legal assistance for victims of domestic violence in Bernalillo County, including representation at hearings for protective orders, assistance with obtaining divorces; clinics on divorce and child support without a lawyer. No fees. Eligibility depends on staff availability. (Note: All calls screened through Women's Community Association, 247-4219, to streamline service.) NEEDS: Monetary donations, volunteers.
    Morning Star Inc. 232-8299. Advocacy, education and support services for American Indian women and children who are victims of domestic violence. NEEDS: Monetary donations, volunteers, canned goods, baby formula, dry cereal, baby food, diapers, baby clothes, toddler clothes, personal hygiene items for women, school items such as notebook paper and binders, Easter basket items, beds, linens, blankets, pillows, furniture, kitchen items.
    New Mexico Coalition Against Domestic Violence. 246-9240. The coalition's member programs provide emergency shelter, counseling, education, life-planning skills and referrals. NEEDS: computers, monetary donations, toiletries, bedding, office supplies, canned food, gift certificates for children.
    New Mexico Coalition of Sexual Assault Programs Inc. 883-8020. Information and referral for victims; pays medical providers for forensic exams for sexual assault victims. Professional and community training. NEEDS: Monetary donations, volunteers.
    New Mexico Crime Victims Reparation Commission. 841-9432 (main office), (800) 306-6262 (toll-free for victims). Assists victims of violent crime with expenses incurred as a result of the crime. Victims, family and dependents of deceased victims and individuals acting on behalf of victims may apply. NEEDS: Monetary donations.
    Pathways (previously called Citizens Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse). 366-2400. Counseling to domestic-violence victims and offenders. First-offender education program in Rio Rancho. NEEDS: Monetary donations; volunteers to talk about their experiences as a victim, in overcoming addiction or control issues with a partner.
    Peanut Butter & Jelly Family Services. 877-7060, 867-2356. Therapeutic preschool in Albuquerque and Bernalillo for children newborn to age 5 and their parents, to learn child development, early intervention, social and emotional skills; similar outreach services; counseling for individuals, couples, families and groups, including play therapy and art therapy; supported living for parents who have severe mental illness or developmental disability and need help parenting; help with parenting and family dynamics in advance of an incarcerated parent's release, follow- up. NEEDS: Monetary donations, arts and crafts supplies, diapers, toiletries, toys, books, tricycles, household items, clothing, shoes, furniture, canned goods, baby food, some fresh food, sponsors for families at various points throughout the year, such as getting children ready for school.
    Presbyterian Women's Resource Center, 823-8850. Provides individual and group therapy for women and adolescents with domestic violence issues, anxiety, depression, grief and loss. NEEDS: Monetary donations for women who do not have insurance to pay for therapy.
    Resources Inc. 884-1241. Peer support, advocacy, case management, outreach, transportation, civil legal assistance, information and referral for victims, families or friends of victims; individual and group therapy for children who witness and for women survivors of domestic violence (held on the same night as the children's groups). NEEDS: Monetary donations, volunteers for court advocacy.
    Victim Impact Program, Office of the District Attorney, 2nd Judicial District, 841-7246. Peer support, advocacy, case management, outreach, legal information and referral for any victim of a reported crime. NEEDS: Volunteers to assist with clerical, courtroom assistance, interns for practicums.
    Women's Community Association, Shelter from Domestic Violence. 247-4219, (800) 773-3645 24-hour hot line. Confidential emergency shelter, food, clothing and advocacy for adults and children who are victims of domestic violence; on-site clinic service team; counseling and referrals for resident and nonresident victims and offenders. NEEDS: Monetary donations, blankets, twin sheet sets, children's clothing, pillows, plastic dishes and glasses, new small tables and chairs, contemporary computers, copy paper and office supplies, printers, vertical organizers, bookends, two-way radios, cell phones.
    Women's Housing Coalition. 884-8856. Support services and housing for single mothers who want to become self-sufficient and who are working or in school. NEEDS: Monetary donations, volunteers, furniture (especially dressers), lamps, small tables and chairs, beds, baby and children's furniture, household items such as pots and pans, cleaning supplies. Call ahead about furniture or diaper donations.
    Youth Development Inc. 831-6038. Shelter and outreach for 16- to 21-year-olds, Prevention, Intervention and Treatment (PIT) Program, counseling, case management, advocacy, help finding affordable housing, independent-living program helping clients complete their education and develop job and living skills, Head Start programs. NEEDS: Monetary donations, volunteers, personal hygiene products, clothing, food, blankets.
