Comic Strip Shootout

By Dan Herrera
Assistant Managing Editor
TO OUR READERS: Take a bow, "Get Fuzzy." A total of 7,864 votes were cast in the second Journal Comics Shootout, this one between "Get Fuzzy" and "Hi & Lois," and it was a scorcher.
The final combined online and mail-in vote was 4,209 for "Get Fuzzy" and 3,655 for "Hi & Lois."
So, the chronicles of a slacker, his naive dog and his cynical cat has earned a spot on the Journal comics page.
Voting starts today on the next shootout. This time it's "Agnes" vs. "Frazz."
"Agnes" was launched in 1999 and currently holds a spot on the comics page.
Agnes, the strip's namesake, is a young girl who lives with her grandmother. She has really big feet and an even bigger imagination. Agnes and her more-earthbound friend, Trout, generate laughs by musing on life as it is in their trailer court, their dreams and their always curious ambitions.
The star of "Frazz" is a janitor who, all the kids know, is really in charge of their elementary school. As his Web site says: "Principal Spaetzle wants to be like Frazz. Fourth-grade teacher Mr. Burke wants to learn from him. First-grade teacher Miss Plainwell wants to get to know him better. Mean old Mrs. Olsen wants to get rid of him. And the students just can't get enough of him."
Voting ends on July 18, so start reading and evaluating, but please vote just once per person.
Instructions can be found daily on the comics page or on the Journal's online edition, ABQJournal.com.
    Happy voting.
