Comic Strip Shootout
By Dan Herrera
Assistant Managing Editor
Say hi to "Hi & Lois" and bye to "Marvin." The latest Comics Shootout had offered a legion of heartbroken "Hi & Lois" fans a chance to resurrect their favorite comic after the strip lost a previous contest. And they made their preference known in a big way.
The suburban family beat the toddler with a vote of 1,974 to 1,084.
The next Comics Shootout, which starts today, pits "F Minus" against "Sherman's Lagoon."
"F Minus" is the creation of Tony Carrillo, a native of Tempe, Ariz. The panel has no regular characters or story line but reflects on the absurdity of life in general.
A rising star in the comics world, "F Minus" won the 2004 MTVu Strips Contest, judged by Scott Adams of "Dilbert" and David Rees of "Get Your War On," receiving more than 200,000 votes. It has also been nominated for a National Cartoonist Society division award: Best Newspaper Panel.
"Sherman's Lagoon" has a bunch of regular characters, and most of them live in Kapupu Lagoon "in the sunny South Pacific just west of the Elabaob Islands," according to the strip's Web site.
The star is a shark named Sherman who spends his time with an assortment of undersea sidekicks, including an unsuave sea turtle, a crabby crab and a polar bear who is more laid-back than Jimmy Buffett.
Look for the clippable coupon for mail-in votes on the comics page, or vote online at abqjournal.com. Either way, voting is over on Oct. 24. Vote just once, please.
