Comic Strip Shootout

By Dan Herrera
Assistant Managing Editor
"Frazz" is the winner of July's Comics Shootout. Look for the strip on the Journal comics page Mondays through Saturdays starting today.
The strip won a big vote by a big margin: It was 10,047 for "Frazz" to 5,893 for "Agnes." That's right, almost 16,000 votes were cast.
Voting starts today on the next shootout. This time it's "Retail" vs. "Mutts."
"Retail" is a relative newcomer to the comics scene. It has been around since 2006 .
The strip follows the follies of the staff at Grumbel's department store. It's stars are Marla Masters, a harried assistant manager played like a pinball by her superiors, her employees and the customers, and Cooper Costello, who works very hard at Grumbel's trying not to work at all.
Anyone who has ever worked or shopped in a store will find a lot in common with "Retail."
"Mutts" has been around almost 14 human years. We really should measure in dog or cat years, because it takes place in the animal world.
And what a touching, yet funny, place that is.
Besides its humor, "Mutts" often gently highlights issues such as rescuing animals from shelters and taking care of pets as they care of you.
Voting ends Aug. 22, so start reading and evaluating, but please vote just once per person. Instructions are found daily on the comics page or on the Journal's online edition, ABQJournal.com.
By the way, you might notice that the September shootout will pit "Marvin" against "Hi & Lois," which was eliminated in the June shootout by a relatively close margin. After many impassioned pleas, we decided to give "Hi & Lois" another chance.
