When I was a struggling college student, I sold TVs at JC Penney. Each employee had a sales goal — a target number set for all of us. The problem with those targets, however, was they were arbitrarily set, and everyone's goal was exactly the same. The store didn't take into consideration each salesperson's individual needs and strengths; nor did it consider the concept of working cooperatively to reach a bigger, better goal. Needless to say, there wasn't a whole lot of buy-in by the sales staff, nor was there much teamwork.
