San Juan River Honored For Trout Fishing
The Associated Press
FARMINGTON The San Juan River is again among the elite.
The river in northwestern New Mexico, long recognized as a premier trout fishing water, has been named one of the top 25 hottest American fishing destinations by Field & Stream magazine's May edition.
The San Juan was among five bodies of water chosen in the Rocky Mountain region.
Editor Sid Evans said field editors were told the find the best. "Not just places with lots of big fish, but waters that were extraordinary for their beauty, diversity and unique personalities," he said.
The article paints the San Juan as a beautiful spot that produces big fish.
"The San Juan is one of the best trophy rivers in the country," Evans said. "Rainbows average 17 inches and often grow to 5 pounds. Strict regulations and a strong catch-and-release ethic help this fertile tailwater produce large populations of giant fish."
The magazine notes the strict regulations in the "Quality Waters" and dedication to the catch-and-release ethic is the biggest reason why the river is consistently among the best.
