New Train Deserves Own Novel
And so it begins. The end of next week, the Rail Runner Express commuter rail to Santa Fe pulls out of the station for its inaugural run. Quite properly, it'll be a celebration loaded with meaning. By the time the one hour and 30 minute ride chugs into Santa Fe, we'll not only have taken a giant leap to the future, we'll honor the past as well. (Monday, December 01, 2008)
Mayor's Tone Out of Kilter
I've now streamed Mayor Martin Chávez's State of the City speech three times, the last being just before sitting down to this because there's been a nagging — and insistent — voice inside me questioning what exactly we are supposed to take away from it. (Monday, November 24, 2008)
What's in A Name for A Monument?
I rather like the idea of naming the planned (far) West Side middle school after the late author and New Mexican literary icon Tony Hillerman. It's appropriate, honorable and in the grand tradition of municipalities who recognize their own in a permanent way. (Monday, November 17, 2008)
Here's To Enabling Progression
Now nearly a week on in a glorious and shining new world following the election of the nation's first black president, there's much to celebrate. And celebrate we have. It's been a terrific time, considering the symbolism of what's transpired. (Monday, November 10, 2008)
Let's Do It All Over on Nov. 5
You know, I'm gonna miss this thing. Call me crazy, but as I told a friend over the weekend, if I had my druthers I'd start the whole presidential race all over again on Wednesday morning. I'm a nerd for these things certainly, but for a lot of reasons I wish we could have a do-over. More on why in a second. (Monday, November 03, 2008)
DA Should Address Profiling
What are we to make of a situation that, if one is to value anecdotal evidence and personal experience, continues to drag the black community's quality of life in the mud seemingly unabated? It's not violence, drugs, or inequality in housing and pay. It's racial profiling. (Monday, October 27, 2008)
You Know This City? Maybe Not
I'd like to offer a proposition to those who might be new to the city, as well as longtimers who might be leaning toward thinking they've got this place figured out. I've been there. It happens at different stages with its own unique trickery. (Monday, October 20, 2008)
Work on Lead, Coal Deserves Pat on Back
Here's the question traffic engineers, safety experts, law enforcement and elected officials have been wrestling with since forever about our fair burg: How in heck do we get people here to just plain slow down? (Monday, October 13, 2008)
McCain, Ramp It Up Here in N.M.
Dear John: Welcome back to Albuquerque! It's been a bit since you've been here solo, when you had a town hall meeting. A lot's happened since the middle of July. A ton. Since then, this race has gone to some rather strange places. We're busting some new sod here. All of us. Including you. (Monday, October 06, 2008)
Newman Had Cool Like No One Else
I miss him already. The thought that there will never again be a "new" Paul Newman film is unthinkable. The outpouring of honors has been justified. This man wrote the book on a very specific type of male actor that, in my view, is long gone. (Monday, September 29, 2008)
