Taos County Commission OKs Penasco incorporation election for Jan. 5
Penasco voters will decide in January whether to incorporate their village as a municipality, The Taos News reported.
The newspaper said the Taos County Commission voted unanimously on Tuesday to allow the election to take place on Jan. 5.
A community group had circulated a petition among registered voters within the proposed municipal boundaries, collecting 203 signatures in favor of holding the election, The News reported. About 300 voters live within the proposed boundaries.
As a municipality, Penasco, which currently is under the control of Taos County, would be able to collect taxes, apply for state and federal grants and provide its own services to residents, according to the newspaper.
