6:40am — A Soggy Day

It’s a good morning … to take it slow on the highways.

Thunderstorms continue to drench Albuquerque and a wide swath of New Mexico this morning.
There were accidents on three of the four approaches to Albuquerque’s Big I as of 6 a.m., and officials were urging drivers to go slow on rain-slicked roads during the morning commute.

Albuquerque reported a record .72 inches of rain for Wednesday, and it looked like even more would fall today.

The big question … will rains put a damper on the 34th annual Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta 2005, scheduled to lift off from several elementary schools at 7 a.m. Friday?

Television weather forecasters were expecting the weather to clear by Friday morning. And the National Weather Service expects improving weather Friday with a few showers and thunderstorms lingering in eastern New Mexico.

According to The Associated Press, the weather service expects high pressure to build over New Mexico on Saturday bringing dry, pleasant weather conditions for the Balloon Fiesta’s first mass ascension at 7 a.m.
