Richardson to make a whirlwind tour of Washington.
Gov. Bill Richardson will be in Washington, D.C., Saturday to speak at a luncheon at the 25th annual convention of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) where he will be recognized for his support in the fight against drunk driving, MADD spokeswoman Amy George said Friday.
MADD formally celebrated its 25th anniversary with a rally and news conference Thursday and will wrap up its annual conference Saturday night.
On Monday, the governor will meet with Bush administration officials to discuss border security, the future of Cannon Air Force Base and agriculture issues, the Governor’s Office said in a news release.
Richardson and state Homeland Security Director Tim Manning plan to meet with Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff about Chertoff’s announced plans to assign more Border Patrol agents to New Mexico’s border with Mexico and to push for more state and local involvement in border issues, the Governor’s Office said.
The governor also plans to meet with Pentagon officials about efforts to find a new mission for Cannon AFB; will ask Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez to urge lifting of import tariffs on Mexican cement; and he will ask Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns about reopening the Mexican border to U.S. cattle exports.
Richardson plans to return to New Mexico on Monday. The trip is being paid for by the Democratic Governors Association, which he chairs, the Governor’s Office said.
