2005 HOMICIDES IN ALBUQUERQUE AND BERNALILLO COUNTY
1. Jan. 19 — Kathryn Hauser, 52, was beaten to death at her home at 3401 Campus NE. Hauser had moved into the Nob Hill house two months before she was killed. Philip Busey, 43, is accused of the killing, and authorities are seeking the death penalty against him.
2. Jan. 21 — Boston Zamora, 24, of Albuquerque, allegedly shot and killed Christopher Gonzales, 23, in the chest at a West Side apartment, 6101 Sequoia NW. Both men worked in the purchasing department at Metro Court. Police suspect drugs were involved.
3. Jan. 22 — Scott Leonards, 34, was stabbed several times in an apartment at 7100 Louisiana NE. Jessica Gonzales, 27, faces an open count of murder. Prosecutors have reached a tentative plea agreement with Gonzales.
* U 4. Feb. 4 — Shane Dix, 28, was shot to death in his van in the 7600 block of Santiago SW. Police suspect meth was involved.
5. Feb. 13 — Armando Espino-Vargas, 22, is accused in the beating-death of 53-year-old Genaro Ahumada-Loya at 8004 Grande SE. Police say Espino-Vargas is either Ahumada-Loya’s son-in-law or his daughter’s boyfriend.
U 6. Feb. 14 — The Office of the Medical Investigator declared that the case of 75-year-old Betty Hill, who died in September 2004 after being hospitalized for four months, was a homicide. Hill had been attacked at the Wyoming Mall.
* 7. Feb. 18 — Jail inmate Ruben Ortiz, 24, is accused in the beating death of fellow inmate Calvin Pendell, 47, inside the jail. Police said Ortiz thought he was hitting a dummy when he struck Pendell in the head several times while the two were being booked.
* 8. Feb. 22 — Mark Aragon, 32, was shot to death in the 2200 block of Felicitas SW. The Sheriff’s Department arrested Jennifer Munoz and Jose Alfredo Nevarez Vasquez and charged them with an open count of murder. Deputies said the killing was the result of a domestic fued.
U 9. Feb. 25 — Police are investigating a suspicious death in which the bones of a Jane Doe were found at 6900 Unser SW.
10. March 5 — Police received tips that Evaristo Ayala, 24, killed 35-year-old Kerry Stephen Haley at his apartment in the 700 block of Menaul NW and buried the body west of Rio Rancho. A few days later, Ayala was arrested in southern Arizona en route to Mexico. Police believe meth was involved.
U * 11. March 12 — Leo Santistevan, 51, was shot to death before his car crashed near Broadway and Interstate 25. Police believe meth was involved.
12. March 22 — Michael Perea, 40, was stabbed in the doorway of his home in the 500 block of 13th Street SW. Perea’s daughter told police she was walking out of the house and said she saw Jose Perez aka Jose Aguero, 39, of “plunging an object into her father’s chest repeatedly.” Police are also looking for Manuel Aguero, 34, in connection with the killing.
13. March 28 — Police allege Nadine Perea, 32, ran over her boyfriend, 37-year-old George Garcia, several times with her vehicle at 127 Sunset SW.
14. March 29 — Katherine Coriz, 45, allegedly killed Robert Komesataddle by pushing him down a flight of stairs at a home in the 300 block of Espa¤ola NE after an argument. Prosecutors have reached a tentative plea agreement with Coriz.
* 15. April 4 — Pablo Contreras-Camarillo, 33, was stabbed to death near Lansing and Bridge SW. Sheriff’s deputies arrested Carlos’ Loya Diaz, 32.
16. May 15 — Andres Medina-Cabrera, 25, allegedly shot roommate Rogelio Villalobos, 23, after an argument at a home in the 500 block of Utah NE. Medina-Cabrera pleaded guilty to second-degree murder.
* 17. May 16 — A PNM meter reader spotted 19-year-old Aaron Anaya’s body in the 1600 block of Bonito SW. Casimira Ramirez, 20, was arrested, but charges were dropped and have not been refiled. Police said it was a gang-related shooting.
18. May 24 — Jeremiah Gurule, 17, was on house arrest when he and 15-year-old Jose Antonio Huizar allegedly shot and killed Darline Pacheco in the 500 block of Indiana SE after an argument, police said.
19. June 1 — Rudolph Arellano was fatally stabbed by John Gonzales Perez, 45, after a fight at Arellano’s 1800 Carlisle NE apartment, police allege.
20. June 1 — Frank Cervantes, 37, was shot to death by his wife, Phyllis, 31, at their 200 75th SW home. Police said it was self-defense.
U 21. June 20 — Herbert Brown, 24, was fatally shot in a parking lot near Tennessee and Central SE.
* 22. June 25 — Mark Garcia, 24, was shot to death at 2226 Isleta SW. Andrew Romero, 18, was arrested. Deputies say the two had been fighting and drinking.
U 23. July 7 — Ramiro Salbatierra, 23, was found dead in the 1500 block of Alamo SE. Police have not said how he was killed, but said it happened after an argument.
24. July 12 — Housekeepers at Motel One near University and Candelaria NE found the body of 43-year-old Raymond Schall Sr.. Police arrested Kimber Olson, 32; Zach Tso, 25; Kimberly Cherington, 32; Robert Lopez, 31; and Jerry Clifford Pulis, 36. Police said the five plotted to rob Schall to get money for meth. They are accused of tying him up and suffocating him.
U 25. July 15 — Timothy Armenta, 36, was killed while chasing thieves stealing a trailer from his home in the 4300 block of Rabbit Brush NW. Police suspect Armenta was run over while following the thieves.
U 26. July 24 — Fred Apodaca, 36, was found dead in his car from multiple gunshot wounds at Louisana and Lomas NE.
U 27. July 27 — Emilio Montoya, 41, was gunned down in a friend’s yard at 1903 John SE. Police suspect meth was involved. No arrests have been made.
28. July 31 — Manuel Barela, 21, was fatally shot outside TD’s Show Club near Osuna and Interstate 25. Police arrested Francisco Ferreria, 24, Erik Barros, 22, and Adrian Sedillo, 21. Police said the three suspects were members of a rival gang who killed Barela because his brother had been involved in a gang-related stabbing.
29. Aug. 1 — Najera Alberto, 50, was found dead in a burned-out recreational vehicle in the 3000 block of 2nd NW. Investigators arrested 34-year-old Antonio Rios, alleging he set fire to the vehicle using gasoline. Police say Alberto may have been killed after a dispute over several beers.
U 30 and U 31. Aug. 2 — John G., and Bernadette A. Ohlemacher both 46, were found fatally shot in their Paradise Hills home in 4900 block of Dover Court NW.
32. Aug. 6 — Raymond Atcitty, 49, , a transient, was found dead in Bear Canyon Arroyo near Academy and Seagull NE. Police arrested Albert Medina, 42, alleging that he pushed Atcitty down an embankment after an alcohol-fueled fight.
33. Aug. 13 — Former District Judge Gerald R. Cole, 72, and his wife, Nancy, 65, were found dead in their home on the 2400 block of Cutler NE. Police say Cole shot his wife and then himself.
* 34 and * 35. — Aug. 15, Manuel Olmos Martell, 27, of El Paso and Juan Garcia, 36, were shot to death near Coors and Los Padillas. Deputies were looking for a 28-year-old Mexican immigrant, Sircillo “El Negro” Olivera, who was doing some work for Garcia and staying in a travel trailer on the property. The suspect and victims are undocumented immigrants from Mexico, deputies said.
36-40. Aug. 18 — State employee Ben Lopez, 54, was gunned down in the 8500 block of Volcano NW. That afternoon, Rider Valley Motorcycles employees David Fisher, 17, and Garrett Iversen, 22, were fatally shot inside the store. That night, Albuquerque police officers Richard Smith, 46, and Michael King, 50, were gunned down while responding to a call to pick up John Hyde, a mentally ill man, in the 1500 block of Gold SE. Hyde has been charged in all of the deaths.
* 41. Aug. 19 — Rodney MacKall, 28, was shot to death on Second Street near Rio Bravo. Arthur Paul “Scarface” Martin, 24, was arrested. Police say the killing was gang- and drug-related.
* 42. Aug. 23 — Daniel Chavez, 29, was stabbed to death on Pajarito Mesa. A warrant was issued for Manuel Tena-Ornelas, 39.
43. Aug. 25 — Due Moore, 73, fatally shot Felix Vigil, 54, at Wal-Mart, 301 San Mateo NE, police said. They said Vigil was attacking Moore’s girlfriend with a knife. Police ruled the killing a justifiable homicide.
44. Sept. 4 — Ryan Stewart, 17, a former Eldorado and Amy Biehl High student, is accused of running over 62-year-old Glenn Lewis near Lewis’ home in the 6900 block of Marilyn NE. Lewis had been in a 15-year feud with teen-agers.
45. Sept. 10 — A homeless man, 22-year-old Robert Moon, was arrested for fatally stabbing Alvin Secatero 40 behind Papa John’s at Coors and Central after an argument.
46. Sept. 12 — Randy Castillo, 27, allegedly shot and killed Ivan Trujillo, 25, near Unser and Gibson. Police suspect meth was involved.
47. Sept. 18 — Jon Paul Martinez, 18,, was fatally stabbed. Police arrested Marcus Vigil, 16, and Anthony Sena, 22,, who they believe had fought with Martinez at a party in the 6100 block of Brenda NE.
U 48. Sept. 20 — Police found the body of 73-year-old Jose A. Gonzales stabbed to death inside his home in the 500 block of Marble NW home.
49. Sept. 24 — Jorgensen Warren, 27, was stabbed many times in the 100 block of Dallas NE after an argument. Police arrested Jeremiah Denton, 17.
50. Oct. 2 — Alexis Vargas, a 3-year-old boy, was taken to University of New Mexico Hospital with bruises to his legs, stomach, back and chin. He died later. The boy’s aunt, Claudia Vargas, 26, and Derrick Patterson, 25, are charged with child abuse resulting in death. Police allege they beat the boy at their apartment in the 500 block of Chama SE.
51. Oct. 3 — James Halwood, 47, was arrested for allegedly stabbing his roommate, Michael Armijo, 49, after an argument near their apartment in the 300 block of 11th NW.
U 52. Oct. 8 — Lieazan Mendez, 23, was stabbed and run over by his own vehicle in the 1400 block of Wellesley NE.
U 53. Oct. 13 — Police found retired Air Force Col. Roy Oakes, 74, stabbed to death at his home in the 5300 block of Veronica NE. Police said he was killed with a sword.
U 54. Oct. 22 — Vasile Popadiuc, 71, was found dead at the Shell Gas station at Bell Avenue and Broadway SE. Police believe he was killed during a robbery.
55. Oct. 24 — Plumber Reynaldo “Rayne” Padilla, 49, was gunned down in the parking lot of Milly’s restaurant, 2100 Candelaria NE. Police arrested 18-year-old Brian Lawson, alleging he shot Padilla to steal his truck. Lawson was a meth user, police said.
U 56. Oct. 24 — Carlos Esquibel, 37, was found dead in his apartment in the 500 block of Walter SE. Police say the gay interior designer was found nude and strangled to death.
U 57. Oct. 27 — An 81-year-old woman, Josephine Selvage, was found dead inside her home in the 7000 block of Bellrose NE. Police said Selvage, who was recently diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, was strangled.
58. Nov. 1 — Victoria Sandoval, 11, was found dead at a mobile home in the 700 block of 98th SW. Police said the girl was raped and died of asphyxiation. Robert Gonzales, 20, was arrested.
59. Nov. 5 — Robert Vincent Essary, 22, of Dulce, was stabbed to death, allegedly by his 40-year-old father, Robert C. Essary while the two fought. The son had accused the father of raping a woman. The suspects were staying at a home at 1905 Amor NW. Robert Essary was arrested and charged.
60. Nov. 5 = Candido Ray Martinez, Jr., 27, was shot in the head after an argument with Michael Paul Astorga, 29, in the 2300 block of Commercial NE. A warrant was issued for Astorga’s arrest.
61. Nov. 13 = Waylon Cohoe, 21, was stabbed to death during an alcohol-fueled fight in the 400 block of Western Skies SE. Police later arrested Kirtie Cohoe, 19 of Milan, and Zebede Martinez, 18, of Quemado.
62. Nov. 17 = A group of meth users had watched the home of real estate broker R.J. Schaefer in the 7700 block of American Heritage NE for a week before allegedly breaking in and shooting him to death and his wife, Olga in the stomach. Police arrested five people: Edward Anthony Esquer, 35,, Jeffrey John Fietek, 41, Bryan Jacob Sandoval, 20, Penny Lynn Rasmussen, 22, and Bene Vigil, 17.
63. Dec. 13 = Elaha Houidobre, 3-month-old infant, was allegedly shaken to death by his father, Donovan, 27, at their home in the 11100 Goldfinch SW. The father was arrested and charged.
64. Dec. 15 = Christopher Kelbe was stabbed to death in the 100 block of Utah NE. Police arrested Cory John Villareale, 29. They say the killing was meth-related.
U 65. Dec. 22 = Josephina Pfieffer, 21, was shot in the head in the kitchen of her home near 98th and Tower SW. Police said she was 8 months pregnant.
66. Dec. 28 = Anna Martinez Nevarez, 59, a mentally handicapped woman, was stabbed to death at her home in the 9000 block of Anacapa SW by her stepbrother Michael Herrera, 51., who then tried to kill himself. He was charged with murder.
