Mobile food pantry hits the road

Demand for goods surging in struggling economy

By Rick Nathanson Journal Staff Writer

The Roadrunner Food Bank’s Mobile Food Pantry operates like “an old fashioned bookmobile,” says Roadrunner executive director Melody Wattenbarger. “We pull into town in a truck and people come and get what they need. Instead of books they’re getting food.”
The need is pressing. According to an annual report issued by the Department of Agriculture, New Mexico has the second worst rate for food security in the nation, meaning one out of six people in the state is uncertain about where the next meal will come from, Wattenbarger says.
“This is a very large problem and ending it takes a multipronged approach, a combination of public and
private efforts.”
The Mobile Food Pantry is funded in part by grants from the Albuquerque Community Foundation, which is participating in the New Mexico Plan to End Hunger — a statewide collaboration between the public and private sectors.
A $100,000 grant from the community foundation is helping Roadrunner cover the operational and equipment costs of the Mobile Food Pantry for the first year, said foundation executive director Randy Royster. The grant is part of a larger three-year, $300,000 commitment the foundation has made to the statewide collaboration.
In addition to the Mobile Food Pantry, the Albuquerque Community
Foundation provides grants to support Roadrunner programs to feed economically disadvantaged schoolchildren and their families throughout the year.
Roadrunner has three refrigerated trailers of different sizes designated for use in the Mobile Food Pantry program. One trailer is used at a time because only one tractortruck is available to pull it. The goal is to have all the trailers on the road daily
serving communities across the state, Wattenbarger says.
“We’re trying to bring people high-quality and healthy foods, like fresh produce and dairy products, whole grain breads and that sort of thing,” she says. “Many of the communities are rural and don’t have grocery stores, so people have a long way to travel to go shopping, assuming they even have a way to get to the grocery store — and many don’t.”

Doling out funds
From July 2007 through June 2008, the Albuquerque Community Foundation has handed out more than $3.1 million in grants to 264 nonprofit organizations, as well as financial aid to 71 students, says foundation executive director Randy Royster. Grants ranged from $100 to more than $100,000, while financial aid ranged from $500 to several thousand dollars.
Since 1984, the foundation has distributed more than $20 million in grants.
The most recent distribution of $3.1 million was made from the “interest and investment growth of our nearly $60 million endowment pool, and represents about 5.25 percent of that investment pool,” Royster says.
This year’s grants were also $850,000 more than was distributed last year, he notes.
That the Albuquerque Community Foundation grants have increased despite a tough economic environment, is due to the generosity and philanthropy of local donors, as well as to the “investment expertise” of those individuals who oversee the community foundation’s endowment funds, he says.
The foundation’s participation in the statewide effort to end hunger is fundamental, Royster says.
Donors and recipients were honored at the foundation’s 2008 Annual Awards & Donor Appreciation Luncheon, held Thursday at the Hotel Albuquerque.
