In F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin, you will face two battles – against flesh-and-blood military types and against the paranormal Alma and her minions.
But is the fight worth the price of admission?
Alma is a young girl with psychic abilities. The evil Armacham Technology Corporation sees the opportunity to take her and use her abilities to create a mindless army of soldiers.
Things go terribly wrong and you and your team are sent in to rescue Armacham’s president to try to find out what happened.
F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin is a first-person shooter in the Doom 2 vein. If you like lots of hallways and many “boo” moments – this is the game for you.
The game is very linear, with one path only to each new checkpoint. The sense is often claustrophobic, which works well in promoting the tense horror feel to the game. Even the outside levels, which are not plentiful, evoke a cramped, nowhere-is-safe feeling.
Weaponry is varied, from standard rifles and grenades to futuristic nailguns and a cool deskeletonizer.
As Sgt. Michael Becket, you have psychic abilities that have been surgically enhanced by Armacham, making you especially interesting to Alma. One of your principal talents is the ability to slow down time, giving you the advantage amongst numerous foes.
Also new to the series is the use of mechs – large machines that you get into and that are equipped with powerful weapons. This addition does offer a welcome diversion from the more routine corridor running that the game mostly subsists on.
And you will be wandering corridors a lot in this game. There are many, many doors to open and tons of enemies to kill, which is probably the chief weakness of the game. After the first 50 hallways, things start to become repetitive.
On the other hand, the developers obviously spent a lot of time detailing some of the levels, especially the elementary school level. Almost every room or hallway features something new – a poster or bulletin board that makes the school seem almost like a real place.
Of course, if you’re spending your time admiring the scenery, the game isn’t doing it’s job – keeping you focused on your mission.
The mission – and the storyline at its heart – is well-fleshed-out and provides the driving force behind the game.
Online, the game supports up to 16 players. Nine maps support deathmatches, flag control-type matches and capture-the-flag type games.
F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin is a solid first-person shooter. It doesn’t stretch the definition of the genre in any way, but it does deliver the goods.
