Two Council Candidates Secure Enough Donations for Public Funds

News, notes but no bickering from City Hall today:

  • District 3 Councilor Isaac Benton and District 5 candidate Dan Lewis have gathered enough signatures and donations to qualify for pubilc financing of their campaigns. District 7 Councilor Sally Mayer, meanwhile, has changed her mind and will no longer pursue public financing. She didn’t like having to ask for a $5 donation while gathering petition signatures. “People seem happier to see me” without the donations, Mayer joked.
  • The city Web site has an interesting page on the idea of a modern streetcar in Albuquerque, including pictures of a 1917 electric streetcar in the Duke City.
  • Mayor Martin Chavez is planning to light up the Big I for nighttime drivers tonight (May 21). Keep an eye out around 8:45 p.m. if you’re interested.
