People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is recognizing Albuquerque as a “compassionate city” for working to save a colony of prairie dogs.
PETA will present Mayor Martin Chávez with a certificate and letter of appreciation. His office stepped in this month to help find a new site for a playground planned by Calvary Christian Academy.
Calvary and the nonprofit Prairie Dog Pals eventually agreed to put the playground on a burrow-free section of land, near Indian School and Tramway NE. Initial plans would have leveled a prairie dog colony nearby.
