Oops! N.M.’s Santa Fe High Not in Top Schools Report

Newsweek made mistake in listing; Should have been Santa Fe High in Florida

It was Santa Fe High School in Florida, not the one in New Mexico, Newsweek named in the 2009 America’s Top Public High Schools report.
That’s the word today from the New Mexico Public Education Department.
The department said in a news release that Newsweek inadvertently included the Florida school on the New Mexico listing highlighted in a news release Monday. The department said Santa Fe High’s name on the New Mexico listing will be removed from Newsweek’s online list this week, and that Newsweek apologizes for the error.
The state Education Department issued a corrected news release today congratulating Moreno Valley High School in Angel Fire and Hobbs High School as the New Mexico schools named by the magazine in its top high schools report.

State education chief congratulates Moreno Valley, Hobbs, Santa Fe high schools

Moreno Valley High School in Angel Fire, Hobbs High School and Santa Fe High School are being saluted by state Secretary of Education Veronica C. Garcia for being named in the 2009 America’s Top Public High Schools report by Newsweek magazine.
“The principals and teachers at these high schools should be honored for challenging their students with high expectations, advanced courses and a college prep curriculum,” Garcia said in a news release. “Students and parents should be proud of the hard work they’ve put into creating a successful learning community.”
According to the news release, schools were selected based on a formula that included the number of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate or Cambridge tests taken by students, and the number of graduating seniors. Schools named to the list are in the top 6 percent of public high schools nationwide measured with this method, the news release said.
