Sandia Tracks Mystery Vials

Sandia National Laboratories says vials containing a mystery substance found at various places around labs properties had fallen out of a trash truck, and did not contain hazardous materials.

Sandia officials refused to answer questions about the incident for nearly 24 hours, but released a statement late Friday afternoon confirming that 12 vials of “non-hazardous materials” were found this week at various places this week around Sandia property. The statement did not identify the substance in the vials.

A team from Sandia and Kirtland Air Force Base conducted a “search and recovery mission” to find the vials, according to the statement. An inquiry concluded that the vials had been properly disposed of in a dumpster, but they fell out of when the dumpster was being emptied into a garbage truck. The vials then fell off one at at time around Kirtland, where the lab is located, according to Sandia spokesman Neal Singer.
