A City Council vote to overturn Mayor Richard Berry’s immigration procedure fails by one vote.
Well, that was about as close as you can get. After hours of debate, all four Democrats voted in favor of halting the mayor’s policy, and all five council Republicans voted against it.
That means the mayor’s plan remains intact: Everyone arrested in Albuquerque, regardless of nationality, will have their immigration status checked by federal agents at the Downtown booking center.
There was passionate debate on all sides, and I’ll have more in tomorrow’s paper.
