TUESDAY NIGHT 9 p.m.:
Turnout for New Mexico’s primary election has been lower than expected with several hours remaining before polls close today, Bureau of Elections Director Don Francisco Trujillo said.
Secretary of State Mary Herrera said last week she expected 28 percent of eligible registered voters – about 260,000 people – to fill out ballots on or before Election Day.
Trujillo, who was out inspecting Santa Fe County polling places this afternoon, said turnout might end up being even lower than that.
A total of 54,423 New Mexicans participated in early voting – which ended Saturday – while an additional 19,688 sent in absentee ballots, according to unofficial numbers from the Secretary of State’s office.
Those figures combined represent about 8 percent of the state’s 923,357 eligible voters. Although the state has about 1.1 million registered voters, many of those voters aren’t able to vote in New Mexico’s closed primary election system.
Polls will stay open tonight until 7 p.m. Check back for more updates after the polls close.
