UPDATED: Pearce Wades Into Obama “Birther” Debate

Pearce says “Supreme Court should look into it”

Former Rep. Steve Pearce got some coverage in the Huffington Post today, where he is quoted as suggesting there were “significant questions” surrounding Obama’s citizenship and/or background. The Republican former congressman, who is running to reclaim New Mexico’s 2nd District seat, also suggested that the debate wasn’t worth wasting time on, but that the Supreme Court should look into it.

The non-partisan Factcheck.org has debunked persistent rumors about Obama’s place of birth and citizenship, and the Obama presidential campaign in 2008 released a copy of a birth certificate showing he was born in Hawaii, America’s 50th state. Skeptics called it a fake.

Here’s a reaction from Pearce, who dismissed the blog post as irrelevant:

“Harry Teague’s liberal allies at The Huffington
Post are attempting to make an issue where none exists,” Pearce said. “Obama’s citizenship is
not an issue in this race. He’s the duly elected President and I respect that.
This election is going to be determined by who is creating jobs, not blog
stories. I will create jobs and cut spending. Teague won’t.”
