Trio Brings A New Vibe To The Blues

Ryan Perry doesn’t mind that his brother and sister are always around.

In fact, he loves it.

“Having my family around to make music with is the best thing,” he said. “It’s better than working with complete strangers.”

Perry. along with his brother Kyle and sister Taya, are the trio Homemade Jamz Blues Band of Tupelo, Miss.

Despite all of them being in their teens, Ryan said age has nothing to do with their music.

“We’ve grown up with the blues greats,” he said. “Our dad played them for us while we grew up.”

Perry said the idea for a band started when his dad went to Korea and bought a harmonica and guitar.

“He tried to learn and it didn’t work,” he said. “They were lying around the house and I began to pick them up and play.”

Perry explains that his influences are B.B. King, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Albert Collins and Muddy Waters, just to name a few.

“I love how blues music moves your soul,” he said. “There’s a story behind every song.”

The trio has released four albums and its latest album is called “The Game.” Perry said the first two albums were recording in their living room and the latest one was done in a studio.

“The recording experience was fun for us because we had our dad there,” he said. “If we were nervous, he’d help us out and get the best out of us.”

Perry said the trio writes all of its own music with the exception of a couple of covers.

“Although we’re young, we try to be true to our art,” he said. “I’m excited to be able to perform as a career.”

The Homemade Jamz Blues Band will performing in the Duke City for the first time on Saturday, Dec. 11.

“We’re excited to be out in New Mexico,” he said. “We know that you all have great weather and hopefully we can get a lot of people out to the show.”

Perry said although the band is always on tour, it does find time to write new material for future albums.

“We try to keep it all together while we’re writing,” he said. “We do have a bit of sibling rivalry, but each one of us has our forte. We stick to what we know and so far, it’s worked really well.”
