Scientists? No, but they write about wonders

Six authors in UNM Press’ Worlds of Wonder science series for young people will autograph their books from 3-6 p.m. today at ¡Explora!, 1701 Mountain NW.

The authors are Michael Westphal (“Cell Phone Science”), Karen Taschek (“Hanging With Bats”), John Fleck (“The Tree Rings’ Tale”), Eva Thaddeus (“Powering the Future”), and Michele Sequeira and Dan Shaw (“Eco-Tracking”). The event, which will be held in the museum’s lobby, is free.

IN NORTH VALLEY: Poets Joan Logghe and Michael C. Ford read from their work at Acequia Booksellers at 3 p.m. today.

Logghe is poet laureate of Santa Fe. Ford lives in Los Angeles; his book of poems “Emergency Exits” received a 1998 Pulitzer Prize nomination.

The bookstore is at 4019 Fourth NW.

AT PAGE ONE: Santa Fe author Gary Beene will talk about and sign “The Seeds We Sow: Kindness That Fed a Hungry World” at 3 p.m. Saturday, April 23, at Page One, 11018 Montgomery NE. The book tells the story of the intertwined lives of black scientist George Washington Carver, Vice President Henry Agard Wallace and Nobel Laureate Norman E. Borlaug, and relates how their kindness and passion to feed the world was passed on and enhanced across generations.

Beene worked 30 years in state government, retiring as the state director of the New Mexico Division of Vocational Rehabilitation.

AT ALAMOSA BOOKS: The Northeast Heights bookstore, which is at 8810 Holly NE, will host these events this week. At 2 p.m. today, Albuquerque poet Renny Golden reads from her latest collection, “Blood Desert: Witnesses 1820-1880.” … Some of the Albuquerque poets in the recent issue of The Más Tequila Review, a national poetry journal, will read from their work from 2-5 p.m. Saturday, April 23.

AT BOOKWORKS: The North Valley bookstore, which is at 4022 Rio Grande NW, hosts several author events this week. At 3 p.m. today Taos resident Tania Casselle discusses the research and writing that went into her book “The Insider’s Guide to Albuquerque.” Noted writing coach Natalie Goldberg introduces Casselle. … Albuquerque poet Lisa Gill reads from her new collection, “Caput Nili,” at 3 p.m. Saturday, April 23. The poetry-memoir looks at personal and institutionalized violence and how a hard-fought medical diagnosis helped Gill to better understand the history of violence and its effect on her health. She will be joined by Kris Mills, who illustrated the book.

AT UNM BOOKSTORE: Albuquerque poet Mary Oishi reads from her new collection, “Spirit Birds They Told Me,” at noon Wednesday, April 20, at the bookstore, which is on the main campus near Central and Cornell.

SOUTHWEST WRITERS EVENT: Five Albuquerque poets will read from their work followed by an author talk at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 19, at New Life Presbyterian Church, 5540 Eubank NE. The poets are Donald DeNoon, Merimee Moffitt, Marilyn Stablein, John Candaleria and Gayle Lauradunn. The author is Mary Lou Dobbs, who will discuss “Radical Ideas on How to Write and Get Published.” The event is free.

IN BERNALILLO: Albuquerque authors David J. Corwell and Lela Belle Wolfert will sign copies of the essay-and-poetry anthology “Voices of New Mexico” from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, April 23, at Under Charlie’s Covers. They have essays in the book. The used bookstore is at 240 S. Camino Del Pueblo, next to Flying Star.

IN SANTA FE: Collected Works, 202 Galisteo, hosts two events this week. Award-winning poet Dana Levin reads from her newest collection, “Sky Burial,” at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 21. … And Harvey Stone talks about his new environmental thriller, “Melting Down,” at 6 p.m. Friday April 22.
