Sen. Eric Griego, D-Albuquerque, announced he would seek the Democratic nomination for the 1st Congressional District for the U.S. House Saturday.
Griego, who will finish his first state Senate term next year, is a self-identified progressive Democrat who has fought for higher taxes, rather than cuts in services, to make up for state budget shortfalls. He has also been a strong advocate for environmental issues.
“We need a Congressman who will unapologetically stand up for working families and take on those who would put the interests of the very richest Americans and large corporations ahead of our children, our seniors and our environment,” Griego said in a statement.
He is the first Democrat to announce his intention to seek the nomination for the Albuquerque-based 1st District. Republican Dan Lewis is the only Republican to make an announcement thus far.
