Sunland Park Mayor Martin Resendiz says he will run for the Democratic nomination in southern New Mexico’s 2nd Congressional District.
While Resendiz is still setting up an exploratory committee, which is generally used as a pre-campaign fundraising tool while candidates waffle about considering a run, he said Tuesday that he’s already decided to seek the nomination.
“At least in my mind, the decision has been made,” Resendiz said.
Incumbent Rep. Steve Pearce, R-N.M., is expected to seek re-election in the district. No other Democrats have announced they will seek their party’s nomination for the seat thus far.
Resendiz, who is starting the last year of his first term as mayor, admits that Pearce has a great deal of support in the area. Still, he said, Democrats should have a chance if they turn out to the polls in high numbers.
“Yes, the district has been traditionally Republican,” Resendiz said. “Things change, though. The population grows and the demographics change.”
Before running for mayor, Resendiz served three terms as a municipal judge. He said he won’t alter his campaign approach in the coming election.
“The idea that we have is to really offer the communities grass roots. Get out there and run a campaign much the same way we do things locally. I’ve won four elections that way,” Resendiz said.
