Smith’s Store Closes Its Doors

The Smith’s Food & Drugs at Carlisle and Menaul NE has closed.

Glass doors were locked and shelves were empty when the Journal took a look Wednesday afternoon at 2620 Carlisle NE.

Yellow signs on the outside of the location say “store closing” and “40% off all merchandise.”

Three signs posted on the doors said the location was closing, listed four other nearby locations, thanked customers for their patronage and said “all associates at this location have been offered positions in other Smith’s stores…”

A Smith’s spokeswoman said Wednesday no job were lost. The store, which closed about 10 days ago, had been underperforming and its lease had run out, she said.

PNM’s Second Solar Plant Now On Line

Public Service Company of New Mexico dedicated its Los Lunas Solar Energy Center, now the company’s largest solar plant and the largest of its kind in Valencia County, on Wednesday.

Comprised of 78,000 solar photovoltaic panels on 50 acres, the solar center can produce up to 5 megawatts of power. Over the course of a year, it will generate enough electricity to power about 1,600 average-sized New Mexico homes, PNM said in a news release.

“We located this facility in Los Lunas because of the available and affordable land, the area’s high solar potential and local support for a facility of this kind,” said Pat Vincent-Collawn, PNM president and CEO. “In a recovering economy, this is an important message for any community hoping to attract and retain businesses.”
