.New Mexico’s congressional delegation is urging the Obama Administration to open a regional Patent and Trademark Office in central New Mexico.
Last month, President Obama signed a bill that streamlines the process for granting patents. As part of that law, the office is required to open at least two regional centers to help address the backlog of 680,000 pending patents.
Senators Jeff Bingaman and Tom Udall and Congressmen Martin Heinrich and Ben Ray Luján last week sent a letter pointing to the many reasons central New Mexico would be an ideal location for a regional office, which could bring as many as 100 jobs to the state.
They cite the area’s highly educated workforce as well as its inexpensive office space and low cost-of-living.
