University of New Mexico regents announced Kent State University Provost Bob Frank as the university’s 21st president this morning after a closed session on campus. The vote was unanimous.
Frank, a UNM alumnus, will be the successor to David Schmidly. Schmidly is stepping down as president when his contract expires in May. Frank said he will earn $355,000 per year in base salary and begin the job June 1.
“I’m a product of UNM, as you all know, for me to have reaped the benefits of this university and then have the opportunity to return and give back is a very personally satisfying moment, so I want to thank the regents for their vote of confidence,” Frank said.
Regent President Jack Fortner said Frank agreed to accept nearly $30,000 per year less than Schmidly to “reinvest” in the university’s academic mission.
