The latest drought forecast: this can’t be good

The latest federal drought forecast, out today (Thurs. 1/5/12), looks grim for Arizona, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas and Louisiana. We’ll get a better feel for New Mexico water supply conditions tomorrow, when we get our first look at the seasonal river runoff forecasts, but today’s drought map is not encouraging:

From the forecast text:

[A] return of dry weather and the ongoing La Niña favor persistence across most of southern Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas. Despite the early winter snowfall in Arizona and New Mexico, La Niña elevates the odds for drought persistence across the Southwest.
