Rio Rancho Police Identify Woman Killed In Crash

Rio Rancho police have identified the woman killed in a crash on N.M. 528 near Sundt on Wednesday afternoon as 51-year-old Francis Madrid.

Madrid was a passenger in a car driven by Jonathan Madrid, 31, of Rio Rancho, according to Rio Rancho police Sgt. Nicholas Onken.

The car was heading north on N.M. 528 and entered the left hand turning lane at the intersection of Sundt.

Madrid allegedly turned left in front of oncoming traffic heading southbound on N.M. 528. The car was struck by a pickup truck headed south on N.M. 528 that was driven by 62-year-old Robert Moxley of Albuquerque, according to Onken.

Joseph Madrid, who is 1-year-old, was a backseat passenger in the car and was taken to University of New Mexico Hospital. He remained at the hospital on Thursday in stable condition.

Moxley was taken to an area hospital following the crash and was  treated and released.

Investigators believe that alcohol might have been a contributing factor in the crash, according to Onken. The crash remains under investigation and no charges had been filed on Thursday.

Rio Rancho police are investigating a fatal crash that claimed the life of a 51-year-old woman on Wednesday afternoon.

Rio Rancho police and Rio Rancho Fire Rescue were called out to a serious T-bone crash involving a car and a pickup just before 1 p.m. at the intersection of N.M. 528 and Sundt.

Arriving officers found the woman, who was a passenger in the car, pinned inside the four-door sedan. She was unresponsive, according to Rio Rancho police spokesman Sgt. Nicholas Onken. Despite the best efforts of first responders and paramedics, she died at the scene, Onken said.

The Rio Rancho woman’s name was not released pending notification of next of kin.

The sedan’s driver and a toddler in the car, as well as a man and a woman who were the occupants of the pick-up truck, sustained non-life-threatening injuries. All four were taken to area hospitals.

N.M. 528 was closed for about a couple hours in both directions near Sundt. Traffic was backed-up near the accident, but police redirected drivers to other routes away from the crash.

No other details were released on the crash. An investigation is ongoing.
