Attorneys for Democratic and Republican plaintiffs, including Gov. Susana Martinez, told a judge today they have reached an agreement on a plan to redraw district boundary lines for New Mexico’s 42 Senate seats.
The compromise plan would create one new Republican-leaning seat in Rio Rancho and a new Democratic-leaning seat in southwestern Albuquerque. It would also make several districts currently held by Democrats more competitive.
Retired District Court judge James Hall will now have to decide whether to adopt the compromise plan or the plan passed by the Legislature in September 2011. That plan was later vetoed by Martinez.
Final paperwork in the Senate case is expected to be submitted by Friday.
