N.M. Officer To Be Honored
A New Mexico Army officer who died in Vietnam in 1965 will be honored today with the rededication of a lodging building at Fort Gordon, Ga.
First Lt. Thurston “Turk” Griffith Jr., who was born in Santa Fe and raised in Los Alamos, was the first Signal Corps officer to die in Vietnam, according to officials at Fort Gordon, home of the U.S. Army Signal Center of Excellence.
Griffith Gym at Los Alamos High School is also named for Griffith, who was killed in combat on Jan. 17, 1965.
4 Apply for Judge Vacancy
Three prosecutors and a private attorney have applied for a vacancy in the criminal division of the 2nd Judicial District Court created by the retirement of Judge Neil Candelaria.
The Judicial Nominating Commission will meet at 9 a.m. Jan. 30 at the Bernalillo County Courthouse, 400 Lomas NW, to interview the candidates and make recommendations to the governor on an appointment.
The meeting is open to the public. Those wishing to comment should be present at the start of the meeting.
Applicants are Deputy District Attorney Troy J. Davis, Assistant District Attorneys Brett R. Loveless and Alfred Quintana and John R. Polk, a lawyer in private practice.
