Taos Couple Accused of Trafficking

A Taos couple was arrested Jan. 4 on suspicion of trafficking cocaine after local police officers found drugs in their vehicle during a traffic stop, The Taos News reported.

Eileen Voight, 33, and Mark Martinez, 34, were stopped for speeding on Cruz Alta Road when traffic Officer Gilbert Atencio noticed that the two seemed “very nervous,” according to court documents.

Martinez allegedly admitted smoking “two roaches” when Atencio asked him about the strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle, but then he attempted to flee during a pat-down search, documents said.

When Martinez was back in custody, Atencio said he saw Voight grabbing and dropping two baggies containing what later tested positive for cocaine, The News said.

Voight is facing charges of trafficking cocaine, tampering with evidence, possession of marijuana and driving with a suspended or revoked license, while Martinez is accused of trafficking cocaine, possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia and resisting an officer, the paper reported.
