LAS CRUCES — The city of Las Cruces has won a $25,000 grant from the U.S. Conference of Mayors to battle childhood obesity.
The Las Cruces Sun-News reports that Las Cruces was one of six cities to win such a grant.
The mayors’ group says the awards went to cities with outstanding programs that encourage healthy weight through balanced diet choices and regular physical activity.
Mayor Ken Miyagishima travels to every third-grade class in the city to challenge students to do four things, including eating five servings of fruits and vegetables, devoting no more than two hours to TV, computer and video games and vowing to exercise for one hour every day.
