Weekend Update

If you were too busy to spend some quality time with your newspaper this weekend, here’s some stories you missed that you might want to catch up on this morning:

  • “Red Tails,” George Lucas’ high-flying movie about the famed Tuskegee Airmen, captures the chaos of aerial combat and the rock-solid camaraderie shared by the black Army Air Corps pilots who flew with distinction during World War II opened to praise from New Mexicans who were part of that elite group. Read the full story here.
  • Chapter 11 business reorganizations edged up to 51 filings in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in 2011, passing the threshold of 50 such cases in New Mexico for the first time in nine years. Last year’s 6 percent increase in Chapter 11 petitions from 48 in 2010 runs counter to two major national trends in bankruptcies: a drop in filings of all types in 2011 and, more specifically, an even steeper drop in the filing of Chapter 11s. More here.
  • Sandia Base Elementary School was one of the 89 schools Secretary of Education-designate Hanna Skandera stamped with a big, fat F. On Thursday, the folks there agreed to let Leslie Linthicum hang around for the day. Read this UpFront column to get a glimpse at life at this school.
