CARLSBAD — Visitors to the Carlsbad Caverns are going to have deal with more delays as the National Park Service works on elevators that take tourists deep underground.
The Carlsbad Current-Argus reports that the two large elevators normally used to ferry passengers into the cave are out of commission for a renovation project that is months behind schedule.
Now Carlsbad Caverns National Park officials have found the two smaller secondary elevators that were pressed into service need their cables replaced.
Weekday elevator service into cavern will be limited to a few hours a day from Jan. 30 through March 8 while the small elevators undergo maintenance.
On weekends and holidays, one elevator will be available throughout the day.
The elevators are used by many people who can’t hike into the cave.
