WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. (AP) — Navajo President Ben Shelly expected an influx of calls after he announced his personal cell phone number during a tribal legislative session, and it was broadcast over the radio.
But he says he’s gotten only a handful of calls from the public so far, including one from a woman seeking financial assistance. He answered the phone Tuesday when contacted by The Associated Press.
Shelly says he’ll keep the number as a way to give the public a direct connection to him. But he says he may end up turning over the phone to staff members to take messages if the calls become overwhelming.
A tribal lawmaker asked Shelly for his number Monday in Window Rock as a way to conduct one-on-one business with the president. Shelly then announced it publicly.
