Gov. Martinez Again Mentioned for a Job in Republican White House

Add Newt Gingrich to the list of Republican presidential candidates who thinks New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez is a good candidate for a job in a GOP presidential administration.

During tonight’s CNN debate, the former House speaker mentioned Martinez in response to a question about which Hispanic politician would be an appealing addition to a Republican presidential cabinet. Gingrich mentioned Martinez but then – in a blatant pander to the Florida audience – suggested that Sen. Marco Rubio, a Florida Republican, might be considered for the vice presidential spot in his administration.

“When you think cabinet, I think, for example, of Susana Martinez, the governor of New Mexico,” Gingrich said. “I actually thought of Marco Rubio in a slightly more dignified and central role than being in the cabinet but that’s another conversation.”

The Florida audience ate it up, of course. In previous days, Gingrich has also suggested he might consider Martinez for the V.P. spot.

Meanwhile, Mitt Romney, who told Sean Hannity last week that Martinez is among a good crop of potential running mates for any GOP nominee, also mentioned Martinez, Rubio, former Sen. Mel Martinez and others as a possible cabinet pick or for “potentially other posts, as well.”

Rick Santorum also mentioned Rubio, sparking big applause.

Ron Paul said he wouldn’t mention names, but suggested that Hispanics would be likely to support his policy of very limited foreign intervention.

“The Hispanic community is especially attuned to the policy of non-intervention,” Paul said. “They are more opposed to war than other communities.”

Martinez has repeatedly suggested she has zero interest in being on a Republican presidential ticket, although many political observers are skeptical she would say no if asked.
