Area Gas Prices Up 11 Cents

Compared with a week ago, metro area drivers are paying about a dime more for gallon of gasoline.

The average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline in the Albuquerque area was $3.06 as of Thursday — 11 cents more than it was the same day a week before, according to the AAA New Mexico Weekend Gas Watch.

The Albuquerque area still has the least expensive average price in the state.

Statewide, the average price for a gallon of the same type of gas climbed by nine cents to $3.18 since last week, AAA reported.

“New Mexico motorists are paying about two dollars more per fill up than they were last week,” AAA Texas/New Mexico public affairs representative Sarah Schimmer said in a news release. “New Mexico drivers are paying an average of $45 for a typical 14-gallon fill up.”

Meanwhile, the national average for a gallon of gas is $3.45.

According to AAA, “Gasoline prices have moved higher this week and analysts say the increase is likely the product of expected refinery shutdowns occurring both in the U.S. and Europe.

“Additionally, the ongoing geopolitical tension with Iran has also kept upward pressure on crude oil prices. Anytime there is a potential tightening of supply prices usually increase.”
