NM Immigrant Forum to Host Ariz., Ala. Leaders

SANTA FE — An Arizona state senator leading the charge to overturn that state’s much debated immigration law and an Alabama activist fighting his state’s new anti-immigration law are scheduled to speak at a forum in Santa Fe.

Arizona Sen. Steve Gallardo and Greater Birmingham Baptist executive director Scott Douglas are slated to address a forum Friday hosted by a coalition of civil rights and immigrant rights groups.

Organizers say the forum aims to connect immigrant protests to the 1960s civil rights movement.

Gallardo is heading efforts to overturn Arizona’s SB1070 law.

Douglas has been organizing religious leaders to speak out against Alabama’s recently passed immigration law requires police to determine citizenship status during traffic stops and mandates government offices to verify legal residency for everyday transactions like obtaining a car license.
