The state Supreme Court has overturned the state House redistricting plan issued by a district court judge and told him to draw a new map.
The court in a ruling today said the plan adopted by retired state District James Hall contains partisan bias, and ordered him to come up with a more politically neutral plan for the 70 House districts.
The court said when two House districts were consolidated in central Albuquerque, the result should have been a competitive district where either Democrats or Republicans could win. The court suggested that Hall redraw that district in the next map.
It also told him to try to unify communities including Silver City, Deming and Las Vegas in the new map. And it told the judge to strengthen a Hispanic voting district in the Clovis area.
The court urged Hall to get the map redrawn by Feb. 27.
