ABQ architect elevated to College of Fellows

The American Institute of Architects recently announced that Albuquerque architect Van H. Gilbert, FAIA, has been elevated to its College of Fellows, an honor awarded to members who have made contributions of national significance to the profession.

Gilbert is founding principal and president of Van H. Gilbert Architect PC. Over the past 36-years, under Gilbert’s leadership, the firm has accomplished a wide range of award-winning projects including the Albuquerque Aquarium, laboratory and classroom buildings for New Mexico State University, New Mexico Tech, Eastern New Mexico University, the University of New Mexico, and the V. Sue Cleveland High School in Rio Rancho.

Gilbert’s pioneering designs include K-12 schools, colleges and universities, as well as zoos and aquariums.

Recently, Gilbert has expanded the reach of his practice to include collaborations with the San Diego Zoo Global on an initiative, “Zoos and Aquariums 2030,” that is redefining animal care and the visitor experience.

“Being named a Fellow is a true honor,” Gilbert in a statement. “The honor is not mine alone, as architecture, when it is most successful, is a collaboration. I am grateful to my team of exceptionally talented and hard-working professionals at the firm.”

His firm’s new endeavors include work at the Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium in Tacoma, Wash., Chicago’s Brookfield Zoo, San Diego Zoo, and a recently completed sea lion exhibit at the Tulsa Zoo.
