Justin Slaughter, who was charged with first-degree murder in the Nov. 22, 2008 shooting death of Julian Orosco near Grindstone Lake in Ruidoso, last week entered a plea of no contest to voluntary manslaughter in the case, the Ruidoso News reported.
The plea to a lesser charge carries a maximum sentence of six years in prison and a possible fine of up to $10,000, the News said.
State District Judge Karen Parsons also ordered Slaughter to undergo a 60-day diagnostic evaluation before she imposes a sentence, the paper reported.
As part of the plea agreement reached Friday, Slaughter also pleaded no contest to charges of resisting, evading or obstructing an officer and aggravated battery on a peace officer — all of which could add four years to his sentence, the News said.
“My brother is worth more than ten years and a $10,000 fine,” Orosco’s sister told the judge during Friday’s hearing. “What did he do to you? You took him away from us,” she said to Slaughter.
