Dr. Seuss Honored at Cottonwood Mall Saturday

The 75th anniversary of the publication of Theodore Seuss Geisel’s first children’s book — “And To Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street” — will be marked with a “75 Years of Imagination” celebration at Cottonwood Mall from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, according to a news release.

Albuquerque-area families are invited to take part in an in-mall book reading by local celebrity readers; have a photo taken with a Mulberry Street-themed backdrop or an event VIP known as “The Cat in the Hat”; watch a television episode of PBSKIDS’ “The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That”; decorate Mulberry Street bookmarks and Dr. Seuss-inspired crowns and tiaras; and help create “And To Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street” booklets, the release said.

The event will conclude with a parade ending at the mall’s Center Court, where goodie bags with treats will be handed out.

The celebration is organized by the Simon Kidgits Club, Dr. Seuss Enterprises L.P. and Random House Children’s Books, and nearly 100 malls owned by the Simon Property Group across the country are taking part.

Theodore (“Dr. Seuss”) Geisel wrote and illustrated 44 books for children, won the Pulitzer Prize in 1984, an Academy Award, three Emmy awards, three Grammy awards and three Caldecott Honors.

Though he died on Sept. 24, 1991, he continues to inspire new generations to explore the joys of reading, the release said.
