Dates Added For Penitentiary Tours
The tours of the Penitentiary of New Mexico’s “Old Main” near Santa Fe have proven so popular that five more dates have been added.
They are 10 a.m. each day on April 13, May 11, Sept. 14, Nov. 9 and Dec. 14. For a reservation, call 505-827-8645 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays.
Come Out And Count the Birds
This Saturday, from 10 a.m.–noon, birders will take part in the Great Backyard Bird Count at the Randall Davey Audubon Center and Sanctuary, 1800 Upper Canyon Road.
The free event comes with refreshments, as well as volunteers and staff to help with bird identification and data entry. You can also participate in the bird count from the comfort of your home. From Friday through Monday, just watch and count birds for at least 15 minutes on any day, and then enter your results at www.birdcount.org.
The annual count is hosted by the National Audubon Society, the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, and Bird Studies Canada.
Gumbo Contest At Buffalo Thunder
Buffalo Thunder Resort & Casino is hosting its second Annual “Gumbo Throw-down” competition to benefit Cooking with Kids, which helps elementary school students to make healthy food choices.
On Saturday, beginning at 1 p.m., chefs will compete in creating cuisine that celebrates Mardi Gras and Southern culture.
The event will be held in the Turquoise Trail Restaurant at Buffalo Thunder Resort & Casino, with $10 admission.

4 Firms Competing For LANL Contract
Four small businesses have been selected to compete for up to $200 million in services related to safely packaging Cold War-era wastes for final disposal, according to Los Alamos National Laboratory.
The companies—Environmental Dimensions, Inc.; North Wind, Inc.; Navarro Research and Engineering, Inc.; and Portage, Inc.—will bid for a number of individual tasks, such as handling waste containers, transporting them to licensed disposal facilities, and providing verification and certification of delivery.
All four companies have locations in northern New Mexico.
“This award reflects our commitment to fostering opportunities in northern New Mexico for small businesses, which play such a vital role in our local economy,” said Dan Cox, LANL’s deputy associate director for Environmental Programs.
Hearing Loss Group Has Chapter in SF
Santa Fe has created the newest chapter of the Hearing Loss Association of America, joining existing chapters in Albuquerque and Las Cruces.
The committee that organized the chapter includes chairman Thomas Dillon III, Virginia Carr, John Hooper and Bob Wilber, with additional help from Barbara Fix, all of Santa Fe.
The chapter already has given public presentations on what HLAA affiliation offers and on assistive devices for those with hearing loss.
The group’s next meeting will be 10 a.m. Saturday in the library of the Unitarian Universalist Church, 107 W. Barcelona Road. Dr. Bopanna Ballachanda of Premier Hearing Centers will discuss the latest technology in hearing aids and in devices that interact with those hearing aids. Attendance is free and open to the public.
