A Roosevelt County sheriff’s deputy was uninjured after the work vehicle she was driving was hit by a train Wednesday morning south of Portales and was cited for a moving violation, the Portales News-Tribune reported.
Chief Deputy Sheriff Malin Parker told the News-Tribune that Deputy Amber Parker was crossing the tracks at County Road U and U.S. 70 around 8:30 a.m. when a southbound train struck the rear end of the deputy’s vehicle.
The car was spun around by the impact with the train which was traveling at 40 to 45 mph, Parker told the paper.
The deputy refused medical treatment and returned to work later in the day, the News-Tribune said.
She was cited by State Police for a moving violation, since vehicles are required to stop at all railroad crossings that do not have crossing guards, according to the paper. The deputy told police she didn’t see the train.
Amber Parker, who has been with the department about four months, passed an alcohol test and a drug screening was sent off for testing.
