Union Boss Seeks House Seat

Longtime labor leader and educator Christine Trujillo of Albuquerque is a candidate for the state House.

She’s seeking the Democratic nomination for the District 25 seat currently held by Democrat Danice Picraux, who is retiring.

Trujillo, a teacher for 21 years, is in her sixth term as president of the American Federation of Teachers-New Mexico. She’s also an elected AFT national vice president.

She spent 10 years as the president of the New Mexico Federation of Labor AFL-CIO, the first educator and woman to hold the position.

Trujillo has served on the Public Education Commission, the Education Commission of the States, and the New Mexico Public Schools Insurance Authority.

Trujillo also is an appointed Democratic National Committeewoman-at-large.

GOP HOUSE BID: A retired Albuquerque Police Department detective will make another run at a state House seat in District 23.

Paul Pacheco says he will run in the Republican primary in June for the seat now held by Rep. David Doyle. The GOP’s Doyle is leaving the House to run for the state Senate.

Pacheco ran in the GOP primary in 2010, coming in behind Doyle.

Pacheco retired from APD in 2010 after 27 years. He was president of the Albuquerque Police Officers Association and a member of the FBI’s Violent Fugitive Task Force.

For the past five years, he has helped run a business that provides drug and alcohol treatment.

He served on Gov. Susana Martinez’s transition committee for the Departments of Public Safety and Homeland Security.

OFF TO D.C.: Gov. Susana Martinez will head to Washington, D.C., today to take part in the winter meeting of the National Governors Association, her office said Wednesday.

During the event, which starts Friday and runs through Monday, the governors are scheduled to visit the White House and meet with President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden.

Martinez might have to take some homework with her on the trip – she faces a March 7 deadline to act on all bills passed during the legislative session that ended a week ago.

The Republican governor sits on a pair of National Governors Association panels: the health and human affairs committee and the special committee on homeland security and public safety.
