Where the Los Alamos Cuts are Coming From

In assembling background material for a piece to run next Tuesday on the problems at Los Alamos National Laboratory, I asked for a breakout of the roughly $300 million reduction in the lab’s 2012 budget as compared to last year. Here’s where the National Nuclear Security Administration says the declines are coming:

  • Minus $140M in the Weapons Program
  • Minus $100M in other NNSA programs
  • Minus $60M in Work for Others

“Work for Others” is work done by Los Alamos for agencies other than the Department of Energy/NNSA. It’s been a weak spot for the lab, and is one of the reasons Los Alamos is in trouble right now as compared to Sandia National Laboratories, where WFO is going up this year.
