Santa Fe and Albuquerque Public Schools were among four school districts nationwide selected to receive a week of “peer-to-peer” concerts and workshops by the Thelonius Monk Institute of Jazz.
The program will be held in Santa Fe and Albuquerque schools from Feb. 27-March 2. The two other performances will take place in Philadelphia and Boston.
J.B. Dyas, vice president of education and curriculum development at the institute, said the performances will be presented by five gifted music students from Miami’s New World School of the Arts, one of 11 public performing arts magnet schools around the country participating in the Institute’s National Performing Arts High School Jazz Program.
“The group will be featured with saxophonist Bobby Watson and vocal sensation Lisa Henry,” he said.
Each school visit will include an assembly program with a performance for all students, followed by workshops for the school’s jazz band and choir. The visiting student performers will play alongside and share ideas with their New Mexican counterparts.
The workshops will take place at Capital High School, New Mexico School for the Arts, Santa Fe High School, Larragoite Elementary School, Santa Fe Indian School in Santa Fe and Highland and Valley high schools in Albuquerque.
The weeklong tour will conclude with a concert open to the public on March 2 at Jazzbah, 119 Gold SW in Albuquerque. Performing will be Watson, Henry and the five Miami students. Shows begin at 8 and 10 p.m. For further information, call 505-243-5299 or visit www. jazzbahabq.com.
