LAS CRUCES (AP) — A New Mexico State University professor plans to use a $32,000 grant from the National Geographic Society’s education foundation to boost geography education across the state.
The university announced the grant Wednesday.
Professor Michael DeMers plans to use the grant as seed money to build the New Mexico Geographic Alliance. It will be part of a network of 50 such alliances that will be aimed at improving geographic education throughout the United States.
DeMers says he wants to make it fun for students by bringing more technology, online education and other activities into the classroom.
In three years, he says his goal is to start bringing educators to NMSU to learn how to teach Geographic Information Systems as well as how to teach geography using such devices such as iPads.
